A Comedy of Procedure

“Earlier this year, the Chinese graphic design community fought – viciously, righteously – over whether the poster for the 43rd Beijing International Film Festival is “good”. The problem seemed to be that it was too avant-garde for conservatives used to symbolism, and not avant-garde enough for people who have been watching minimalist typography go in and out of fashion for the past ten years. The ones who wanted to stay out of it simply said, ‘It could’ve been worse.’ Which is as truthful as it gets for most design that passes for mass consumption in China these days.”
