Exhibition History

Founded in 1990 in Vienna, the museum in progress sought to build an institution that is not, technically speaking, an institution. Instead, its organisers, Kathrin Messner and Josef Ortner, decided to do without a brick-and-mortar location and directly commission artists and curators for projects ranging from billboards to gifts handed out to airline passengers. Looking back at the history of this “museum” is a chance to think a new site and structure, audience and artwork.

"If the idea of the museum as mass medium was hardly pioneering in 1990, no precedent ever achieved a comparable level of political impact and polarisation."
