PORTRAIT: VIVIAN SUTER

Vivian Suter has been painting in the Guatemalan rainforest since the 1980s, and her elaborate garden studio is an environment all its own, where the painter’s eco expressionism reflects the diversity of its surroundings. Her large, stained canvases soak up the nature around them, literally – weather, dirt, and tiny creatures join in. In the installation of her work, Suter’s unstretched paintings are hung as if out to dry, like wet leaves after a storm.

"Like nature itself, the future is undetermined, fragile, and incredibly susceptible to movement and viewer’s interactions."
