As Ronald Reagan is sworn into his second term as US president, Mikhail Gorbachev becomes the General Secretary of the USSR – both incarnating largerthan – life personifications of the Cold War, soon to be the last of their kind. Then everything was narrated through the sweeping conflict of macroideologies – capitalism versus communism, freedom versus authoritarianism, or demolition of a class-based society versus unbridled exploitation – macro-views that permeated all aspects of culture and daily life. This Manichean struggle went beyond the geopolitical. Its polarisation and totalising nature shaped our collective consciousness – big heroes, big ideas, big wars, big revolutions, and big disappointments…”
